
Stanley no 4 vs no 5. I just want to turn them into good usable tools im not trying to collect them yet lol. After owning the stanley sweetheart for a two years i picked up woodrivers 4 smoother to compare. One or other of these types seem to be most commonly the ones first purchased and used by diyers. 5 and 15 for the no.
Posted 03 01 2010 0942 pm. I would go with the 5 12 stanley its the best plane long to flatten u can tune it to take thin shavings for somewhat smoothing but u might have to follow with a 4 u can get one. I have a no. This is the narrow version of the no 5 originally targeted for tech schools.
Forum topic by rbterhune. I need them both but can manage adequately with either one. A no 4 is a typical smoothing plane. I cant afford a jointer or thickness planer and i dont have a lot of floor space but i want to start squaring up lumber myself.
Thanks for helping identify that no. 4 which sounds like its not all stanley parts. I picked up one that had almost no use it had never been sharpened and was still in the original box very old and tattered cardboard when i bought it. 4 12 back to power tools hardware and accessories forum.
Stanley 5 14 junior jack plane offered 1921 1983. 4 plane when i found this one at a second hand market. I have relied on a stanley 4 12 smoothing plane for forty years plus. I like the light versatile weight of both but choose the lighter weight.
I find the a go for my 3 more often than my 4 for most tasks i just seem to have that extra little bit of control with it. 4 and a handyman plane im converting to a scrub plane. I gave 37 for the no. It was almost in working condition but i thought i might as well document the restoration.
Its basically the longer version of the 3 plane the parts are interchangeable. I had been searching a long time for a bailey no. 11 12 long with a 1 34 cutter. 5 12 or no.
