The stanley 140 is very good at working difficult wood including end grain work to produce a super smooth finish. This is a very useful plane and is one of stanleys better products it would have been even better if they didnt supply it with the cheesy lever cap wheel like that found on the 110 et al and if it had an adjustable mouth.

The 140 is a versatile plane which can be used as a normal block plane with the removable side plate fixed on and as a rabbet plane with the side plate taken off.
