
Staining yellow pine dark. This is my favorite and it was a four step process. Unfortunately when woodworkers try to duplicate that color on new pine by using stain the results are usually disappointing. However it is known for developing a blotchy uneven look and getting an even stain can be a challenge. Some woods just do not take a stain well and pine is one of them.
Antique pine often has a dark mellow color. Yellow pine accepts stain well. Before staining you should sand first with a medium grit sandpaper such as 100 grit to remove roughness followed by a thorough sanding with fine or 120 grit sandpaper to fine tune the woods surface. Staining pine make this inexpensive wood look like a million bucks. Sand southern yellow pine as you would any type of unfinished wood. Once again i used annie sloan dark wax over the wood and then used minwax polyurethane on top. It absorbs stain very unevenly especially around knots and blemishes.

First i used some homemade vinegar stain on the wood to cut the yelloworange color of the pine. Yellow pine has a strong yellow undertone which turns some stains much more orange and yellow.
